| Plan Your Project |
One aspect of a flooring update, however, can't be solved with graph paper and a ruler -- the disruption and mess. To minimize the stress anticipate debris disposal. Collect sturdy cartons for hauling out the old flooring. Check with your local municipality to determine the proper way to dispose of the old floor. Order your replacement flooring early and get all the preparation out of the way by the delivery date. If you won't be done by the time the flooring arrives, plan where to store the boxes or rolls.
Use this list to keep your flooring project organized from start to finish:
- Measure all the rooms you are reflooring and calculate their areas.
- Create a scaled drawing that includes each flooring material.
- Estimate material quantities, including underlayment and other preparation materials such as adhesives, grouts, fasteners, and transitions. Be sure to include any trim pieces.
- Make a list of the tools you'll need. Purchase or rent them. Plan your work so you can return rented tools within 24-hour increments to minimize costs. Nothing stalls a project -- or your enthusiasm -- more than running backand forth to the hardware store orrental center.
- When shopping for flooring visit several suppliers to get the best deal, then estimate your total costs.
